Are the books by Stieg Larsson all about the same original plot?

Are they all about finding the murderer of the old man's niece? Or, does each book have a different mystery to solve? Also, do you need to read part one in order to understand the second and third books? Thanks!|||Absolutely not. Only the first book is about the case of Harriet Vanger, niece of Henrik Vanger. The next two books though, are rather interrelated to each other. From the second book, the focus shifts more prominently to Lisbeth Salander, the Girl; while the third book devotes it utmost focus on her.

You can skip the first book and still follow the next two books with equal understanding. But it does help you in getting into the skin of the characters better and also showcases Lisbeth's talents to a greater extent.

But anyway, there isn't any reason why anybody should give the first book a miss. It's brilliant. You'd absolutely adore it.|||No, there's a different mystery in each one. Blomkvist, Salander and a couple of other people appear in all three stories, but each one has a different plot.

I haven't read the last one yet, but I've read the first one and I'm half way through the second one. You don't *have* to have read the first one to understand the second one, because Larsson recaps how Blomkvist and Salander met and reiterates anything you need to know, but you'll get much more out of them if you read them in the right order. You'll know the characters better and you'll appreciate them more.|||No the old man's niece situation is resolved by the end of book one.

Books two and three are more closely related to each other, though. You could start with 2 if you want (I thought it was the best), but I wouldn't start with 3.
